About Us
The North Atlantic Schutzhund Club (NASC) is a small group of handlers with a strong interest in the sport of Schutzhund. The Club takes a motivational approach to training that is practical, educational, and progressive. The NASC has seen numerous changes over the years and finally found its true home when it became involved in Schutzhund in June, 2001.
The North Atlantic Schutzhund Club had its origin in 1993 as a breed speciality club under the direction of the Canadian Kennel Club. At that time, it was known as The German Shepherd Dog Club of Newfoundland and Labrador, Inc., and initially boasted an astounding membership of 43 people and their dogs. Originally, the majority of members were mainly interested in the German Shepherd Dog as a pet, for CKC conformation, and for the social aspects that often come with any type of organization. However, there was a very small contingent of three handlers who had a strong interest in obedience and who today, are still with the Club and are responsible for its evolution into the sport of Schutzhund.
Although a slight change was made in its title in 2002 that incorporated the word ‘Schutzhund’ into its name, the Club still did not feel satisfied with its image. Consequently, in 2004, the North Atlantic Schutzhund Club finally found its own distinct identity by adopting our current name and its accompanying new logo, thus representing for the first time in a long time, a real satisfaction with who we are.
Today, the North Atlantic Schutzhund Club exists as a strong and committed entity that is dedicated to promoting the unique qualities of the working German Shepherd Dog as it was intended by its founder, Max von Stephanitz. Although we are small in number, we have a collective knowledge base that is founded on a deep understanding of the instincts and drives of the dog whose behavior we strive to shape by applying sound learning principles that have long been proven in the training of animals in all walks of life. We are continuously growing in experience as handlers and are proud of the accomplishments our teams have made with their dogs in just a few short years.
If you are interested in a humble learning experience that can only be achieved with a dog as a true working partner, please give us a call. There is no greater euphoria than that which is realized when man and his dog arrive at the same state of mind in their work together as one.
